Meet Todd Clay: Master Plumber in Two States, 37 Years Deep
Todd Clay has been in the plumbing business for 37 years: two years as an apprentice, four years of schooling, journeyman, and then master plumber licensed in two states. His day-to-day at True covers shower valve change-outs, leak detection, slab repairs, and jetting whole homes.
Apprentice, journeyman, master: the ladder explained
Todd's résumé is the plumbing career ladder in miniature, and knowing the rungs helps you read any plumber's credentials.
- Apprentice - years of supervised field work plus classroom hours; learning the trade under someone's license
- Journeyman - passed the exam, works independently; the backbone rank of the trade
- Master plumber - additional years and a harder exam covering code, design, and gas; can design systems, pull permits, and supervise others
- Licensed in two states means passing two different code exams - state plumbing codes differ more than most people expect
Why a master on the roster matters to you
Most service calls do not need a master plumber - but the judgment calls do. When a job sits at the boundary of code, when a repair could be done two ways with different ten-year outcomes, or when something about the diagnosis does not add up, a company with 37-year hands on staff has somewhere to escalate. You are not just hiring the tech at your door; you are hiring the deepest experience he can phone.
