Meet Justin Kraus: Eight Years a Plumber, By Way of Three Trades
Justin Kraus has been a plumber for over eight years, after earlier runs in carpentry, telecommunications line work, and welding. His average job starts the way you would hope: showing up, introducing himself, and figuring out exactly what is going on before anything gets touched.
Why diagnosis-first saves you real money
Justin's habit - understand first, quote second - is the antidote to the "parts cannon": the practice of replacing components one at a time until the symptom stops, with you funding each guess. A running toilet illustrates it: the cause can be the flapper, the fill valve, the float height, or a hairline crack in the overflow tube. Four different fixes, four different prices. A tech who tests before quoting fixes the right one once.
- Ask any tech: "What failed, and how do you know?" - a pro enjoys answering that question
- A written quote AFTER diagnosis, before work, is the industry-standard protection for both sides
- Multiple trades in a tech's background (carpentry, welding) pays off in older homes, where the plumbing problem is often attached to a framing or fixture problem
