"Don't Need No Permit": Spotting the Roofer You Should Not Hire

This spot plays the nightmare for laughs: a homeowner with a roof leak meets a "roofer" who promises it will cost a lot, does not need a permit, and can start in about six months, as long as the check gets written today. Believe it or not, the narrator says, we see contractors like that all the time.

The pitch that follows is the serious part: do your research, check out the reviews, and hire somebody you can depend on. You have seen the True trucks everywhere and the office on I-4; the reputation is the point.

Red flags that end the conversation

  • Full payment, or a large deposit, demanded before any work or materials show up
  • "You don't need a permit": roof replacements in Florida require permits and inspections, full stop
  • No license number on the truck, the card, or the contract (and no willingness to share it)
  • Door-knockers who "just did your neighbor's roof" and need an answer right now
  • No local address, no local reviews, and a phone number that changes between visits

The two-minute background check that beats them all

Every legitimate Florida roofer holds a state license you can look up in less time than a coffee order. Search the company or license number on myfloridalicense.com, confirm it is active and matches the name on the contract, and ask for the certificate of insurance. Then read the reviews, and read them the smart way: sort newest first, and look for the pattern (communication, cleanup, follow-through) rather than the star number alone. Ten minutes of checking beats ten months of chasing a contractor who was never real.
